Muscimol is a member of the class of isoxazoles that is 1,2-oxazol-3(2H)-one substituted by an aminomethyl group at position 5. It has been isolated from mushrooms of the genus Amanita. It has a role as a fungal metabolite, a GABA agonist, a psychotropic drug and a oneirogen.
Clinical signs of muscimol toxicosis begin within 30 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion and have been termed the “pantherine–muscaria” syndrome in humans, which is characterized by mydriasis, dryness of mouth, ataxia, confusion, euphoria, dizziness, and tiredness.
